Construction works to fix a missing link in Melbourne’s protected bike lane network will commence this month, with protected bike lanes being introduced along Exhibition Street, between Flinders and Bourke streets.
The Stage One upgrade will see 900 metres of continuous protected bike lanes installed to replace the existing painted peak period-only bike lanes, and address sections of road where there are currently no bike lanes.
The new bike lanes will connect to Melbourne's existing bike lane network as part of a corridor between Carlton North and the Yarra River-Birrarung. This project will provide a safe, efficient, sustainable transport alternative that will support physical distancing and get the city moving again when restrictions are eased.

NEWS (16 Oct 2020): Just weeks after bright orange NEURON MOBILITY electric scooters arrived on Canberra's streets, a second player has entered the market, complete with their own distinctive colour.
BEAM MOBILITY is the latest company to launch an e-scooter service in the capital, with its vivid purple scooters arriving on Thursday.
It's expected 750 scooters will be seen in Canberra in coming weeks, with 150 of them available from the first day of operation.

Electronic scooters could be a way to avoid gridlock when Melbourne's COVID-19 lockdown lifts, amid concerns that people will use cars rather than public transport to get around.
Victoria's road rules continue to prohibit the use of e-scooters on footpaths at speeds over 10km/h or those with a power output of more than 200 watts.
However, the prospect of increased car use due to infection fears has prompted calls for a rethink of Melbourne's transport options, including the potential legalisation of powered scooters.

- Leave a minimum of 1 metre distance when passing a cyclist in speed zones 60km/h or lower, and
- Leave a minimum of 1 metre distance when passing a cyclist in speed limits over 60km/h.
Brisbane council is installing dedicated bicycle lanes throughout the inner city. They thought that this pop-up initiative could be achieved really quickly and easily when traffic was down during COVID-19. However the relatively swift return of vehicles to Brisbane roads, meant the window of opportunity closed too quickly.
Which begs the question, why isn't Melbourne taking advantage of our extended lockdown to do something similar? There is a clear and obvious need to reduce the load on public transport out the other side of this extended COVID lockdown and EScooters, E-bikes and bicycles simply have to be part of the solution.
The UK have fast-tracked an E-Scooter scheme in the wake of COVID-19. E-Bikes were made legal in New York City in April 2020.
